Do i need an expert driver for my new car?

Posted by ashams | Posted in Science | Posted on 11-04-2011

While surfing through the net(though its only the frequent job),i came across the interesting fact that self driven cars have taken the wings on road and that  too by the effort from giant tech top GOOGLE…what a surprise?..This shows the opening of a new era, where everything is gonna be  automatized soon…but  the unrealistic part of the story is that, GOOGLE is te key behind the automatic self driven technology(although sensors and other equipments are there)..

Google’s Sebastian Thrun, the software engineer who heads the project, gave a short talk at TED in Long Beach, California, about the effort — including a touching opening about how he was influenced to research ways to make driving safer by after a childhood friend had been killed by a car.Thrun showed a video montage of the auto-driving cars on regular roads that was pretty amazing. You could see the cars avoiding things like a deer that dashed in front of one or another making it carefully around a small hillside road, as a large truck came toward it.

The car is going so fast because Google specifically programmed it to do so, in this case. Normally, it wouldn’t be making all those squeals and cornering so hard. But because it’s on a closed course, Google choose to demo that it can drive aggressively, if needed. You’ll notice the operator driving it at the very end, and that’s because the automated route ends a bit further back from the loading area.

The robo-car knows the route it’s supposed to follow, in this case. It needs a special route programmed, because there are no roads to follow. If it were on a regular street, typically a destination would be programmed in as with a GPS, a general route computed, and then the car would navigate. It has even driven routes from San Francisco to Los Angeles, all through automation, Google says.

It uses some radars sensors, video cameras and laser range finder to “see” other traffic, as well as detailed maps (which we collect using manually driven vehicles) to navigate the road ahead. This is all made possible by Google’s data centers, which can process the enormous amounts of information gathered by our cars when mapping their terrain…

Thats all for today…..bye from ashams….

‘ROBOMATICS’- SWARM ROBOTICS WORKSHOP NOW AT AMAL JYOTHI

Posted by abin444 | Posted in Articles, campus blogs, Campus Daily, Department News, Electronics and Communication, Fests & Trainings, General, Projects and Seminars, Science, uncategorized | Posted on 20-01-2011

Swarm robotics is a new approach to the coordination of multi-robot systems which consist of large numbers of simple physical robots.  Swarm Robotics is a technological advancement in Mobile Robotics.  The  main  focus  of  this  workshop  is  to  introduce  to  the  students  various  methods  of  communication that can be used to transfer data between multiple machines.
This approach emerged on the field of artificial swarm intelligence, as well as the biological studies of insects, ants and other fields in nature, where swarm behaviour occurs. The swarm behaviour involves constant change of individuals in cooperation with others, as well as the behaviour of the whole group.  A key-component is the communication between the members of the group that build a system of constant feedback. The model of distributed computing — using many computers to work on a single large task — is somewhat similar. Unlike distributed computing, however, each individual in swarm robotics deals with unique stimuli.
Potential applications for swarm robotics include tasks that demand for miniaturization (nanorobotics, microbotics), like distributed sensing tasks in micro machinery or the human body. On the other hand swarm robotics can be suited to tasks that demand cheap designs, for instance mining tasks or agricultural foraging tasks.
What we deal in the workshop are:
    Artificial intelligence
    Short and long range wireless communication
    Sensor network
    Mechanical structure analysis and design
    Making a line follower robot and grid solving robot
    Communicating a robot with a PC, through radio frequency
    Implementation of swarm intelligence
Students can participate as a team of three and each team will be provided with a takeaway robo kit. The students will have to pay a registration fee of Rs 1400 per head. We will be providing an advanced Swarm Robotics Kit for each team and you can take away the kit after workshop.
Duration:
The workshop is for 2 consecutive days, 28th and 29th of January, 2011.

Smart Pills

Posted by baadshah | Posted in Science | Posted on 18-08-2010

DO YOU FORGET TO TAKE YOUR NEXT DOSE OF MEDICINE….?

Amalites… check out this new amazing innovation in the medical field. Scientists are bringing a new revolution called the SMART PILLS.  A  pill that texts your cellphone when your next dose is due. Mmm Smart indeed.. The chips in the pills alert a patch attached to the patient’s shoulder when swallowed. It also texts the patient if he or she forgets to take medication.

Smaller but smarter....

The system, known as Raisin, also monitors heart rate, heart activity and how well the patient is sleeping — all of which may indicate a worsening condition, reports the Daily Mail. With a stricter medication regime, heart patients are less likely to be admitted to hospital in an emergency. Well now n need to worry about our grant parents not taking their medicines at right time. Well we need to discover something that will remind us to study our subjects on a regular basis

SOLAR IMPULSE…. Makes History

Posted by baadshah | Posted in Science | Posted on 13-07-2010

The SOLAR IMPUSLE, a plane that works on solar power has set a history when it continuously flew for more than 24 hours across Switzerland. Mr Andre Bochebergh, who was the pilot also entered into the pages f history by doing so.

solar impulse

This is the first time that any solar aeroplane is achieving such a great thing and this opens many vistas to the engineering world. The IMPULSE used 12000 solar cells during day time to store the energy for flying during the night time without any break.

India’s First Light Weight Fighter Aircraft

Posted by baadshah | Posted in Science | Posted on 13-07-2010

A group of scientists and engineers designed and built india’s first ever light weight fighter aircraft. This fighter plane is named as NP-1 has been brought out by the Indian navy. This very special aircraft is the sole one among the light weight aircrafts in the world that can fly from a warship.

The aircraft is designed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s AIRCRAFT RESEARCH AND DESIGN CENTRE. The plane can carry two persons and will be a milestone in the history of Indian airforce. This has once again made india among the top charts of military nations of the world.

CAN YOU OVERCOME DEATH

Posted by baadshah | Posted in Science | Posted on 21-06-2010

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE DEATH?????

No need to get bewildered… lets try to find out some crazy answers for all those basic questions that mankind started asking since their origin…

The human body , as seen by the great VEDIC CULTURE is nothing but a system. As far as we engineers are taught (forced to learn), a system is a group of components that work together to achive a certain specific goal. In a machine the components will wear out and as the maintenance is being done , the machine will start working as it did earlier. Human body is an organized collection of cells that form tissues that in turn creates the organs which will constitute the functional systems that are eventually integrated. Well this is a macroscopic view. Lets go down to the very minute, microscopic level of life.

Cells….. how do they form….? When you, me or any one in this planet were in their mothers stomach (wrong usage), certain factors coexisted to give the necessary development for that very mass of flesh. Two genetic cells one from your mother and one from your father(again a wrong usage) united in certain specific thermodynamic biologic condition to give birth to a new cell. Now the question is “SUPPOSE , IF BY SOME MEANS YOU ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE ALL THOSE CONDITIONS THAT WERE MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, EXCEPT THE PLATFORM, THEN CAN YOU CREATE LIFE….. CAN YOU MAKE A NEW HUMAN BEING”…. Platform here refers to our mothers stomach. Is this possible??

A recent paper presented by Dr. Robert Lanza, a leading world scientist and co-author of “Biocentrism”, Redefines Death. To Dr. Lanza, individual bodies are destined to self-destruct, but something important is left after they do. He calls it the alive feeling, the “Who Am I?” This, he says, is a 20-watt fountain of energy operating in the brain and it doesn’t go away at death.
Is this immortality? Yes and no. A proven axiom of science is that energy never dies. It can neither be created nor destroyed. Okay, but does this energy transcend more than one world or universe? Where does it go when the body dies? Is this what religion calls our soul?

A recent fiction released in the local language says like this. Death occurs only after a body passé through a few states. First the temperature goes from the body. This makes the blood flow to a stand still. The cells gets dead at a very fast rate. Even before these happen the consciousness goes. By our medical science this state is death. But the real death has still not approached the body. It comes only when the 5th type of breath, the “prana” goes out from our body. Then death is complete. After death the material body gets destructed by microscopic organisms. But the elements like memory, soul, spirit etc remains there in the sorroundings.

Now suppose if we can integrate these elements and suppose we are able to make a new human body, CANT WE BRING BACK A PERSON TO LIFE EVEN AFTER BURNING HIS BODY…..? silly question but its worth. Our ignorance to the hidden facts and secrets of this mother nature doesn’t mean that the above said possibility cant happen . the ways may be wrong but still the possibility remains there alive….. there has been reference to great medicines like “MRUTHASANJEEVANI” – a medicine when fed in right proportion and amount can bring life back,in the great Vedas and epic poems. references are there in our great stories of bringing a dead person back to life…. The study of concepts like dark matter, anti matter etc leads the new scientific world towards the existence of a supreme power that controls every life…… For time being the above mentioned stories will remain as just stories itself but may come true in future

RELIGION Vs SCIENCE

Posted by baadshah | Posted in Science | Posted on 21-06-2010

Controversies were there about the coexistence of science and religion. Infact it is still a hot and sensitive subject in the current materialistic world. From time immemorial. Or rightly speaking from the day man tried to reason everything around him with the logic he has got, the existence of a supreme power was questioned. Undoubtedly there has been splits and great wars were fought which produced sarcastic results. But one thing remained unchanged. Man continued to question everything around him and the same man believed that there is indeed something that is beyond their logical ability and calculations.

is religion against science

Lets stop here for a while and lets walk back a bit, into our own past. If seeing is believing, then has man seen enough to believe that there doesn’t exist anything called a supreme power- a creator, a thing that maintains everything and a destroyer. The same science with which man tries to reason everything around him has proved it many times that our eyes cheat us every now and then. With that eyes , how can he state his conclusions. There are still creatures to be discovered in this planet. There are races yet to be known. There are lands yet to be discovered. There are phenomenas  that seek explanation. There are mysteries unsolved. There are truths untold. If man is a failure in his own planet in answering these many questions then how can he go to search for the facts that goes way beyond his capacity and control.

This inefficiency of man was known to some and they tried to restrict his quest that is extremely giant to his eyes and imagination. They tried to teach him those lessons through different set of theories and simple rules. Before questioning those rules it is expected to study them thoroughly and understand what they really mean. A direct physical communication between the unseen & unknown and  us is impractical. Only possible way is a communication at the elementary particular level. Religion is something that tells us this method and it is nothing but science. It is like an encyclopedia that man always had with him but never  really bothered to turn its pages. Religion is science. A truth that is not likely to be stated.
