HOSTEL TALE: CoFFee with Fine

Posted by abhilash | Posted in The Hostel Weekly | Posted on 16-11-2011

Are you tired? How much will you pay for an Indian filter coffee? How about a cappuccino? Have you ever heard about a coffee that worth Rs.500? No??? Then visit our hostel.

It’s not made up of gold or silver, simply with the usual coffee beans that we get locally. Now the question arises, why to pay this much? It is for the place at which you drink the coffee….

Bed-coffee is meant to be drunk in the mess hall in our hostel not in our rooms. Today itself few of our mates were caught by a private detective of our hostel, and were asked to meet the Authority.

The response from the authority (as heard from the students who were caught) was so simple:

  1. Pay Rs. 500
  2. Ask their parents to call up the authority.

Now, what would they tell to their parents after such a serious offense, how would they ever face them again?? What would the authority tell to the parents “your son has committed misconduct along with his friends…..so shameful……they have been drinking coffee…..you should make them understand not to do such things……. ”

This is one of the hostel tales……and will continue…..

**NOTE: All the above is a blend of reality and fiction. It has been written showing no offense to the authorities. Students have been penalized (Rs. 500) for drinking coffee in their rooms which is against the rule.

IT’S STUDY TIME

Posted by abhilash | Posted in The Hostel Weekly | Posted on 11-11-2011

From last three and half years, it’s a timing which I cannot forget, actually it’s a timing which no hosteller can forget, it’s the study time of the hostel, and the reason is that we are being constantly reminded about it by the authorities. Naah, I’m not going into all those, I just wanted to share an incident which happened last night.

I and three of my friends were in a double room. Although we gathered for study purpose, but it created little noise that attracted one of the authorities to our room.

Knock-Knock. I opened the door and there he stands. All of us in attention position! Although it was a serious offense but the moment turned funny when he told “pattiku, magaram masam pole aanu ninde karyam” we stared laughing. A laptop was there on the table, in which a movie folder was opened, he asked to delete it, Joyal(Annan) tried his maximum to persuade him that no movie ever resided in his laptop! When Annan felt that it wasn’t going to work then, he told that they were all documentaries. Authority told ”eda, njan delete cheyyam”. Annam did a clever job, he changed the view to small ones and deleted one movie “troy”. Authority asked him to delete all others,”eda, troy matram alla, ellam cheyada.

Another dialogue from Authority “ithinte akathu pattiku kazhikyan ullathu undu”. We couldn’t hold our laughs. Annan played his maximum, protesting it, and finally Authority told him to bring the laptop to his room, and asked four of us to take our chairs and invited us to his room for rest of our group study. While I was taking a chair from another room I heard him telling to one of us “……(something something)…….ketoda manu (pause) manuele

One among us was from ECE, he told the Authority that he had come to take a movie from Annan and rest of us were studying. He turned to Annan “nee anoda ivide distribution cheyyane”.  We were controlling our laugh until he said,

ninde chachan anoda ividithe film distributor

And we all started laughing. He gave us a final warning and we all returned. We entered the room, and busted into a laugh teasing Annan. Annan told that it was the second time he related his father to film industry. Previous time it was as film-director, now its distributor.

But for me, picture abhi baki hai mere dost. When I was leaving for my room, he again caught me and told “appzhu ninde room iviede onnum alle”, I told that I came for studying, he said “eda, nee udapu onnum ilathe aano padikyan vanathu”, he told that because I didn’t carried any note. I said that Annan already had notes. Then he said “eda, cherekan pokane alkarum atleast oru katrika kude vekkum!

I reached my room, my roommate told that the same Authority came to that floor also and scolded few of them. I felt a little satisfaction hearing that.

Since we never expect such dialogues, that study time became an entertainment time for all those hostellers who were listening to that Authority’s conversation with us. And Annan was the real star that night!

hostel tale……mess time stories

Posted by abhilash | Posted in The Hostel Weekly | Posted on 23-08-2010

Food is something which satisfies our mind and body. It soothes all our senses but it’s not the tale of our hostel. The food which we get from the mess is actually a mess of grains and vegetables. Sometimes we wonder what we are eating, I mean they start cooking for something and finally reach to something which is not yet listed by the nomenclature societies…..

Some of us have even generated fear of this food. After one takes food from the mess authorities (who serve food after precisely measuring the quantity) he settles down staring at the stuff he got on his plate. Then he goes for a long mind battle whether to eat it or not, finally defeated by the call of hunger he eats some. Then he eats more after thinking about his mess-bill. And then with lot of guilt he dumps rest of food into the waste-bin. Surely you need a lot of effort to eat “that food” and to throw “any food”, because both are very difficult……

But we can’t blame anyone, because arranging food for all of us is a big task. And they work really hard to provide us meals (three times a day).

Present days………….

But now conditions have changed a lot. Both boys’ and girls’ hostel have a common mess now. i mean a common kitchen, dining halls are different,  but they are also eating the same thing. Food is much better now. And wastage has been also decreased. Now we can use mess hall for conversations other than complaining food. They have started giving chapattis (although they have given only once, a trial.).

We are very thankful to our hostel wardens for considering our demands and  making favorable arrangements. Hope they would maintain this and would try to make it even better.
